So don't forget to head over to pod chaser Character Creation Cast calm to be redirected right to our pod chaser page. And that's it for announcements this week. We don't have a review to read because we do not have Amelie here. But how about we get to the show, and meet these amazing people we ended up making with James enjoy

Ryan Boelter  2:20

On the last episode of Character Creation Cast, Emilia was creating an aristocrat on a mission to find their one true love. James was creating a ghost of a famous figure from history with the desire to mentor another as I was creating a fallen angel bent on revenge against those who wronged them. We're picking up right where we left off last time. Enjoy.

James D'Amato  2:49

Yeah, I'm thinking I'm trying to decide if I want to tie this into some of the concepts that freelancers that we've hired. Have Created and trying to see if anything feels really appropriate. I am going to be a ghost of someone from the liquid swords monastery. So for those that don't know, the liquid swords monastery is a setting supplement for sky Jack's that was created by James Mendez Hodes. It is because music was like the core inspiration for spear at the start through the Decemberists. Mendez decided to expand out what that discography could actually cover. And so he created a bit of the setting inspired by the Wu Tang clan. So and Chinese mythology, so the liquid swords live on top of a massive cryo volcano, and they study water. They study water through science, they study it through Magic and poetry and philosophy, and in as many myriad ways as it possibly can be studied liquid swords monks, who do study martial arts, but they also study rhetoric and diplomacy, strategy, poetry, physical movement, all sorts of different things. And they deploy scholars throughout the world to consult different, wealthy and powerful people so that they can bring back money to keep the monastery going. their ultimate goal is to restore harmony, or at least the goal of some of the bugs because there are so many different splintered factions within the liquid swords, it can hardly be said the group has a solitary goal, but at least some of them wish to restore the harmony between humanity and water.

Amelia Antrim  4:55

They're very cool. Let's see here. So

James D'Amato  4:57

now we've got to pick careers and careers. are analogous to your class. So if you're familiar with d&d, you know, this is more your job, and that'll determine what class skills you have. So with the liquid sword traveler, that was one of the first ones that stood out to me when I looked at the careers before we actually even got into the liquid storage discussion.

Ryan Boelter  5:24

Are they they looks like they have brawl and melee?

Unknown Speaker  5:29

Yes.

Ryan Boelter  5:30

Um, because I'm thinking this this character is kind of on a mission to do some damage somewhere.

James D'Amato  5:39

Interesting. Okay. So, if your character was a member of the liquid swords, which they very well could be, they would a traveler essentially trains at the monastery and they're kind of like mid level bureaucrats. You would have the the wise, I actually don't know if they're called masters in James's lore, I'll have to look that up. But you have kind of the central philosophers that teach different disciplines at the monastery itself. They usually stay put, and they can live pretty comfortable lives just teaching their philosophy and skills to younger students. There are plenty of younger students who all they do all day is train or work or do menial tasks, sort of working their way up within the organization. And the travelers are folks who have acquired some skill, basically enough skill to be dangerous, that the their teachers send them out into the world to do things on behalf of the school. Sometimes it is, you know, these rich people have hired us as bodyguards or consulting sorcerers. So we need to go out and do what these people say so that we can get paid and keep the school going. Sometimes they're going out literally to deliver messages from the monastery to other monks who have been placed around sphere. Sometimes they're looking for hidden artifacts or information or whatnot. So if you're a traveler, you have received training from the liquid swords. You are part of the school, and you're currently working for the school.

Ryan Boelter  7:28

Okay, interesting.

Amelia Antrim  7:30

I have no plan at all, but I just really want to be a necromancer. I

James D'Amato  7:36

only have one necromancer in the settings so far, so a second one would be interesting.

Amelia Antrim  7:43

We'll see what happens.

Ryan Boelter  7:44

So what's the difference between brawl and melee?

James D'Amato  7:47

melee is with weapons and brawl is with your fists.

Ryan Boelter  7:50

There we go. A little bit more finesse in my combat.

Amelia Antrim  7:54

What are you thinking James?

James D'Amato  7:56

I am going with wanderer

Ryan Boelter  7:58

wandering Ghost? Heck yeah. So once we pick our career, then we just select some skills that give you one free rank and those skills.

James D'Amato  8:11

Yeah, yeah, every career will come with one free rank and four separate skills. And that will make it easier to buy certain things. You know, with your tart starting XP, you can go you can decide how you want to invest things in different ways. But the higher your core stats are your core characteristics, which we'll get to in a second and your skills, the better dice you'll be using for certain checks. Mm hmm.

Amelia Antrim  8:41

Yeah, so for my skills, my for my career skills, I picked coercion, discipline, knowledge and knowledge forbidden

Ryan Boelter  8:47

rice, I went with athletics, charm, melee and star watching.

James D'Amato  8:54

Oh, interesting. I went with our khana knowledge adventuring, Star watching and vigilance.

Ryan Boelter  9:00

Very nice.

James D'Amato  9:01

So star watching, because that is a sky Jack's thing. In actual maritime history, people used to use the stars to navigate the seas before we really had robust ways of pinpointing where people were on the planet, people would have to figure out based on their position and the stars position where they were in the world. In the world of sphere, most of the stars have fallen from the sky. So there are like six stars. So you really have to watch very carefully to figure out where you are. But also, the stars and their movement have a dramatic impact on what happens on the planet of sphere. So if somebody tracks the movements of the stars carefully enough and understands how they move Intuitively enough, they can actually predict certain things about the future. Like I said earlier, seasons flow wildly completely out of order. And some would even say randomly, a good star watcher will know when the seasons are going to change. They'll be able to tell what the weather is going to be like, and they may even be able to make important divinations about what is going to happen to them on a day to day basis. Nice.

Ryan Boelter  10:30

Yeah, that that pretty much tracks with what I was thinking about it. So that's awesome.

James D'Amato  10:35

Okay, so next up, we've got character characteristics. If you look at sort of towards the bottom of your sheet on Genesis Emporium, you will see that you've got experience points to spend straight from character creation. This system runs on experience. So everything that we do when we Add skills, talents and characteristics will affect the number of experience points that you have available, which this is really going to determine what you're good at and what are the primary things we anticipate your character to do in a given adventure. Character characteristics are the most important thing in character creation, because you can only spend a certain amount of your XP on character on characteristics and character creation, and you will not be able to just spend them up later on in the game. The only way to increase them after character creation is going to be actually completing a talent tree, which ends with increasing one of your characteristics. Oh, wow.

Amelia Antrim  11:50

Do you remember this from when we did Star Wars? Yeah, look, it was.

Ryan Boelter  11:54

It looks the same to the different stats too. So that that really helps. If you've listened into our Star Wars episodes. It's the brawn agility, intellect, cunning, willpower and presence.

Amelia Antrim  12:08

Okay, so how do we increase these inherent?

James D'Amato  12:11

Okay, there's so there's a little, there's Yeah, there's a little gear icon it

Amelia Antrim  12:15

found it. Well, actually, let me look at my skills and see what they go off. So it looks

Ryan Boelter  12:20

like the smart thing to go from one to two. It takes 20 experience to go from two to three, it takes 30 but I'm guessing three to four is 40. It is.

Unknown Speaker  12:30

Yeah.

James D'Amato  12:32

So you can really spend a lot. Yeah, you can't be careful. You can be like, Oh, well, I'm done, I guess.

Ryan Boelter  12:41

Yeah, so I started with ad XP right off the bat. And my brand started at three agility to one for intellect coming and willpower and three for presence. So I can see where this character is kind of strong. And I guess if you look at the screen kills, it tells you in parentheses, which characteristic is attached to your skill, right?

James D'Amato  13:07

Yes, it does. So when I build characters where I think we mentioned it earlier, but when I build characters using Genesis, I always use Genesis Emporium. This is a tool that was made by fans of the Genesis system. Sky Jedi who actually is a fan of the campaign podcast. I believe they've moved on to doing other coding projects. But what they created in this is extremely helpful. Mm hmm.

Amelia Antrim  13:38

Oh, they made one of the really good dice rollers two that I've always used for Genesis two.

James D'Amato  13:44

Yeah. they've they've made a lot of cool stuff. So a big thanks to Sky Jedi that just makes doing this so much easier.

Ryan Boelter  13:53

Interesting. There's a lot of good options.

James D'Amato  13:56

Yep. And I will also point out why You're doing this with skills. You also have talents at the very bottom of the page. So those talents are going to they'd be something if you have the Genesis core book on you that they'll be explained in more detail, but they're kind of like feats from d&d where they provide unique special abilities, as opposed to increasing your skills and your characteristics is just going to increase the dice pool that you use to roll. I think if you're starting off and you don't like mechanically heavy systems, you don't really need to engage with talents that much, especially for starting characters, what you do with your skills and your characteristics are going to be more important for what you do you know, day to day in the game.

Ryan Boelter  14:52

Mm hmm. Oh, interesting. I'm looking at the talent list from a character here in the front. One is undaunted, though your wings have been clipped to your body remembers what it was. You can restore your connection to the divine by rebuilding your wings with Angel feathers. They will help you see truths about yourself that were lost or forgotten. They do not need to be yours. They just need to be a piece of divinity. That's amazing.

James D'Amato  15:20

Yep. And that is one of the primary character journeys for Gable, one of the main characters on campaign night. Gable collects Angel feathers, and that allows them to restore memories they had of being an angel and serving in the sovereigns court. Which for Gable, you know brings to light a lot of troubling things about their past. Mm hmm.

Amelia Antrim  15:46

I spent most of mine just playing around with my characteristics and then making skills slightly higher. It's not very exciting to read off aloud. Just trust me, I did a great job everyone

James D'Amato  15:59

with Like, we probably should go through some of the characteristics that you got, but I'm just,

Amelia Antrim  16:07

well, what's important is that my brown is at one. So, you know, it's an Amelia character. It's not good at finding,

Ryan Boelter  16:15

I guess I'm the tank of the party

Amelia Antrim  16:17

that checks out.

Ryan Boelter  16:20

I don't know, if I still got 30 xp left, I bought two points of intellect to push it from one to three. So I

Amelia Antrim  16:29

mean, you could go and increase some skills I can, cuz, because I think it's 10 to buy a non career skill and then it's five. I think it changes depending on how high the skill is actually, right. Yeah, I think it's five times what you're raising it to. plus five, it's not a curse, if I remember correctly.

Ryan Boelter  16:49

Yeah. Oh, that's interesting. And can you can you buy other talents?

James D'Amato  16:54

Uh, you can buy talents. Yes. If you go down to the bottom, there'll be a box that says talented. If you click on that, it'll show you all the ones that are currently available to your character.

Ryan Boelter  17:03

Mm. Interesting. Since I don't know what any of these mean maybe I can just click on one that sounds cool.

James D'Amato  17:11

I'm trying to build a bring up the core rulebook so that we can look into some of that. Mm hmm. Oh, yeah, definitely gonna get that that rules.

Amelia Antrim  17:22

I usually don't get talents because I can't remember that I have them. They're not really, I mean, there are good ones and like there are some that are very helpful to have, but I never remember that I have them. So it's not worth spending the XP on a thing that you never use because I could get better at playing the game, but that's not the route that I choose to take.

James D'Amato  17:42

I mean, that's that's certainly an option.

Ryan Boelter  17:45

very tempted to take duelist

James D'Amato  17:48

it is a popular one. I think at least two characters have

Ryan Boelter  17:53

proper upbringing. Interesting,

Amelia Antrim  17:56

huh? you fancy

Ryan Boelter  17:59

you Know what I think I'm gonna take Perry. There you go. I just

Amelia Antrim  18:05

happen to open the book exactly that page.

Ryan Boelter  18:08

So if I take Perry, that's only five experience to buy Perry, now I want to buy another battalion. Command, I'm addicted to talent. Okay, Brian, you have to I don't have a problem. I guess not being awesome anytime I want.

Unknown Speaker  18:25

But why would you want

Amelia Antrim  18:29

I think I always feel like talents are the easier thing to add on later to.

James D'Amato  18:33

Yeah, talents are like they start out remarkably cheap. I mean, if you really want to progress through a talent tree, you might want to invest in some of the roots of that to start out with, but it's really up to you. There's no right way to play this game. I think talents are where the real power game lives. Huh, but you know, a character who has not invested in talents. You know, they're not going to be behind the rest of the party.

Amelia Antrim  19:09

Yeah. I think that Ryan just proves how we make characters though because you always have that little bit more power gamey tendency.

Unknown Speaker  19:17

I do.

Amelia Antrim  19:19

I mean, it's from your background.

Ryan Boelter  19:20

Yeah. from playing. You know, the the good ol palladium heroes unlimited system.

Amelia Antrim  19:27

Mm hmm. One of

Ryan Boelter  19:28

our favorites. Uh huh. It's it's still fun.

Amelia Antrim  19:34

Those episodes were some of my favorites. They are they were so much fun to do. We were in Jeff and John's just started making up rules just to see if I would believe them or not.

Ryan Boelter  19:44

Oh, I could buy a single Frank. Do I want to though? Hmm. Maybe

Amelia Antrim  19:52

this is the exciting part of this. Oh, like, do I want to do this?

Unknown Speaker  19:55

Maybe.

Amelia Antrim  19:56

I like that. We always treat it like it's so high stakes to like Oh no. Should I pick this? Should I not pick it? And then we never do anything. So it doesn't matter.

James D'Amato  20:07

I mean, it's important you could you don't, oh, you might be invited to one of these games one day, and you'll need to bus to like, have the character already made. And if you made the wrong choice, that'll ruin it. It'll ruin every

Amelia Antrim  20:22

everything will be over for you sure. You didn't invite us here just to like, make NPCs for you.

James D'Amato  20:29

Based on the NPCs that are in front of me, 100% I am sure that I did not do that.

Ryan Boelter  20:41

I mean, if you think about it, if you think about it, all the characters we make on the show are NPCs. I mean,

Unknown Speaker  20:47

that's true.

Amelia Antrim  20:50

That made me really sad.

Unknown Speaker  20:54

Oh,

Ryan Boelter  20:55

you have so much potential that they never live up to. I mean, on the other hand, character creation is playing the game. So therefore they are PCs.

Amelia Antrim  21:04

Who was it wasn't granted that was like Yeah, but then you don't get your dirty game all over them. That's true.

Ryan Boelter  21:09

Hmm. All right, I know I don't want that. I kind of I kind of wake up one skill somewhere, and it's gonna be great.

Amelia Antrim  21:20

It's gonna be the perfect skill to be the perfect skill. You're gonna need it

Ryan Boelter  21:24

and then there will be you know what I'm gonna rank up to skills that are my class skills.

Unknown Speaker  21:29

bold choice upper.

Ryan Boelter  21:31

Okay, I think good. I added a rank in medicine and perception. And in addition to parry, I also chose swift which lets me go through like difficult terrain as if it was not difficult. Kind of highlighting the the other worldly. You know, aspects of being a fallen angel.

Unknown Speaker  21:57

I like it. Me too.

Amelia Antrim  22:01

Well, that's what matters.

James D'Amato  22:03

Hey, that's role playing. You gotta do what you like.

Ryan Boelter  22:07

Uh huh. All right, how are you doing?

Amelia Antrim  22:10

I'm doing great. I've been done for a while. I'm done as well worry about talents.

Ryan Boelter  22:14

I guess the the person that has the least experience took the longest Imagine that. What is the price?

Amelia Antrim  22:23

I bumped up a couple of my characteristics so I have Bron at one agility at two intellect at three cutting it to willpower three and presence at three. Ah

James D'Amato  22:33

Wow, I am the same I believe brawn one agility to intellect three cutting to willpower three presents three.

Amelia Antrim  22:41

Wow, nailed it.

Ryan Boelter  22:44

That's amazing.

Amelia Antrim  22:46

Let's see for my skills I have cool discipline, medicine. perception. Define. scroll back up. coercion, knowledge and knowledge. forbidden.

Ryan Boelter  23:00

I started with knowledge for bedding as well as a fallen.

Amelia Antrim  23:04

Yeah, I think I started with that one. But I put it up to it to fancy.

Ryan Boelter  23:10

I put star watching up to two as well. Nice, huh? Gotta be good at where you come from.

Unknown Speaker  23:15

That's fair.

Amelia Antrim  23:18

I'm from the sky. So I know about.

Ryan Boelter  23:20

Exactly. That's how it works, right?

Amelia Antrim  23:23

I think so. James, did you pick any talent?

James D'Amato  23:26

I did pick two talents, I guess. Are we going through our skills? I didn't know what the order was that we were doing.

Amelia Antrim  23:32

Oh, I don't think it matters. Okay. I think that we just did we do whatever we want. Because it's our show

Unknown Speaker  23:38

FFFF

James D'Amato  23:41

data structure, data structure. It's been years. So the skills that I picked were medicine, which is that one vigilance at one arkana at two leadership at one negotiation at one Knowledge adventuring, also one and star watching at one. Then the talents that I grabbed are clever retort, which allows me to grant someone to threats in a conversation. So I can sort of stress people out and needle them through my words. And then rapid reaction, which allows me to spend strain, which is one of the derived stats that will I guess, talk about in a second strain to add successes to any cool or vigilance check. Nice.

Amelia Antrim  24:38

Yeah, do we want to talk about Dr. Stats? Let's do my favorite thing and role playing.

James D'Amato  24:45

So the derived stats in this game are wounds strain, your soak value and your defense. Your wounds are your meat your like actual hitpoints your strain is the mental and physical stress that you can go through. So, in a fight, you might be able to take a lot of damage as strain where you're dodging attacks, you're not actually suffering lethal damage. But you can also take strain in conversations with people. Genesis is one of the few games that can make social combat kind of an interesting thing. Where you can go in a conversation and actually suffer stress during the conversation that can affect you down the road. Or, you know, you can have a duel of wits with someone where your hit points quote unquote, are your strain. Your soak value is based on your brawn and it's how much you reduce any incoming damage. And defense is actually really based on your armor.

Amelia Antrim  25:55

Okay, cool. So based on that I have 11 wounds. 13 strains. One soak.

Ryan Boelter  26:01

Hmm, I have 13 wounds 11 strain and three soak. Oh, here I am. Like I said, I'm the tank. Yeah. And then Perry allows me to like deflect damage against me. Like once per hit or something like that. Nice Yeah,

Amelia Antrim  26:19

it's a it's a really useful talent. Yeah, absolutely. Now what do we do?

James D'Amato  26:24

characters we have to name them. Yep, we do have to name our characters. Oh, that's the hard part. Yeah, it's not the easiest part.

Amelia Antrim  26:33

Have the book.

Ryan Boelter  26:35

Oh, you got your special like million names book? I'm sure is there any thousand plus baby names that's close to a million. The plus really gets you there. Right um, is there any good names for fallen angels in there?

Amelia Antrim  26:51

Ah, you know there's not a section for that. But we can probably come up with something for sure. Or we can just roll randomly and go to that page.

Ryan Boelter  27:00

No, I don't want to deal with that. I'll roll one d 1000. No thanks. Ah,

Amelia Antrim  27:06

hold on. I think I want to look up something. Well, I guess Ryan, do you have a gender for your character? Um, I'm thinking, like,

Unknown Speaker  27:19

see here?

Amelia Antrim  27:22

Because I really like the name Ezra. Okay. Hmm. Which means both helper and strong. Hmm. I think that that's a good name for you.

Ryan Boelter  27:31

That is a good name. I will contemplate that.

James D'Amato  27:33

Okay. I am using the naming convention that was outlined by Mendez in the document that they created as a freelance, which usually combines a title with a classic Chinese surname. So I went with old song Hmm, that's very fitting. old song The wandering ghost. Mm hmm.

Amelia Antrim  28:03

That's a good there's no list in here for good necromancer names.

Ryan Boelter  28:07

I don't know why I'm putting so much thought into this.

Amelia Antrim  28:09

Because we always it matters.

Ryan Boelter  28:12

All right. my character's name is Ezra fallen star.

James D'Amato  28:17

Like, subtle.

Ryan Boelter  28:19

Yeah. Mm hmm. Um, and I think they are kind of like a demain gendered. Like woman presenting character. I haven't created a gendered character yet. So, she they pronouns. Excellent. And they are not extremely subtle. Especially when it comes to swordplay. Very cool.

Amelia Antrim  28:49

I just want to pick like a really like hoity toity name. I think we're gonna go with Eudora Atherton.

Ryan Boelter  28:56

Ooh,

Amelia Antrim  28:57

it's a name and it's a choice that I made.

Ryan Boelter  29:02

Okay, I gotta write these down before I forget them. Was it Fedora African? Eudora?

Amelia Antrim  29:08

No, I did make a character named Fedora and that was on that was on a different shelf.

Ryan Boelter  29:14

Now you you, you also create recreated them for one of our episodes, I believe. Hmm, possibly. I think so.

Amelia Antrim  29:23

wouldn't surprise me. Athena Fedora, what's her name? Yeah.

Ryan Boelter  29:28

Oh, age. Question mark. Where does she doesn't know?

Amelia Antrim  29:33

That checks out? Um, I like the age 36. That sounds like a good age.

Ryan Boelter  29:39

It's a good age.

Amelia Antrim  29:41

I haven't been there yet, but I'll let you know in a few years.

Ryan Boelter  29:44

I'm gonna say question mark, but she looks to be in her mid 20s five foot 10.

Amelia Antrim  29:50

James, do you pick a name? Yeah, old thinking about it. Oh, that's right.

Ryan Boelter  29:55

We're certainly we just make up all this other like stuff like build here. Eyes, all that sort of stuff.

Amelia Antrim  30:02

Whatever your heart is. I think we did it.

James D'Amato  30:05

Yeah, it seems like these characters are pretty well created.

Ryan Boelter  30:34
