Welcome to the second episode of our 36th series everyone. Amelia is still getting settled into her new place. So it's just me again for the opening. And for the episode. We've got a dheeraj Slattery back with us today where we create an additional eight teen characters for tension. But before we get to that, a just a few announcements, or Wait, do I have announcements? I mean, there's my bi weekly ky mera team@twitch.com erudite games at 7:30pm Central Time every other Friday. And there's also losers a love story, the adaptation of Stephen King's it using monster of the week and Christine prefaces supplement back to dairy on the horror Borealis podcast feed, right here on the one shot Podcast Network. I'm sure I could talk about how it'd be really awesome if you leave us a podcast review if you haven't yet. Especially leaving reviews on Apple podcasts in order to help us out in the rankings to help others find the show. But even leaving reviews on pod chaser or Stitcher and the like would help us out. I could talk about all that stuff. Or just put links in the show notes. So I guess we'll see what happens for now. While we get to the episode, enjoy the show everyone.

Last time on Character Creation Cast. A disrobe was creating a journalist investigator named Heather while I was creating the driven murder named Alexa, we're picking up right where we left off last time. Enjoy.

Adira Slattery  2:24

So the lovers is one of my cards in constant passionate conflict. So I could have a spouse stripper or a childhood friend. Okay. And I'm gonna go with spouse because that's fun. Oh,

Ryan Boelter  2:41

okay. So you've got a spouse for lover and I have the devil they are enticing and free spirited. A workout buddy, an art dealer or an ex who okay. I'm gonna say workout buddy.

Unknown Speaker  2:59

Nice.

Ryan Boelter  3:00

Okay. And how do they know each other? Yeah, gosh, I want to say that their workout buddies as well. Sure yeah on on the off days that I'm not able to make it

Adira Slattery  3:15

solid right works out with the devil. I'm gonna be naming my spouse you know it Yeah. And we already use Shana for Let's go. Let's go Reagan. Day them for my spouse.

Ryan Boelter  3:38

All right, and then my workout buddy is let's see. Charlene. That's a fun name.

Unknown Speaker  3:48

Yes.

Ryan Boelter  3:51

Diego shirlene. Diego, ah, Shiva.

Adira Slattery  3:57

So then we have the chariot and the hermit. So the chariots want to yours.

Ryan Boelter  4:04

Okay, so the chariot they are courageous and careless. I'm a novice, a bike messenger or ex military. Okay. Goodness. Goodness. Hmm. Like messenger sounds fun. bike messenger

Adira Slattery  4:22

is is really fun

Ryan Boelter  4:29

to deliver these flash drives.

Adira Slattery  4:32

Yeah, so then I'm gonna go with it guy for the hermit for me.

Ryan Boelter  4:38

Oh,

Adira Slattery  4:39

they're so wise but so alone. Other options I didn't pick were dealer and medical examiner.

Ryan Boelter  4:43

Oh, very cool. So this almost sounds like a perfect bike messenger delivers hardware to IT guy. relationship. Yeah. Okay. So what do we got for these two folks?

Adira Slattery  5:01

My name IT guy Billy. We're gonna lean into it guy and use he him.

Ryan Boelter  5:07

Right? And I'm gonna have my mic. I'm bike messengers name be Brad. Also him.

Adira Slattery  5:18

Very cool. Then we have the Son and the fool. Oh, yeah. The fool is one of mine. They are innocent and reckless. My options are child upstairs neighbor and Pet Home. People pick Pat. So much. Yeah, it always makes me very nervous because I'm like any of these orbits can die. Yeah. And it's like, oh, no, I don't want to kill your path.

Ryan Boelter  5:54

Now there there is a certain community where pet does mean a different thing as well.

Unknown Speaker  5:58

Yes.

Adira Slattery  6:01

And that double meaning is is is there? Yeah. You told me that this was a little more family friendly than I generally sort of AM. It's a baseline person. So I was gonna just sort of leave that there.

Ryan Boelter  6:17

Now, we didn't really define it. Exactly. There you go.

Adira Slattery  6:23

Yeah, no, yeah. If you want to do some pet play

Ryan Boelter  6:26

as possible. Yeah. Do we play? We had Lucian con. Oh, of course. Yeah.

Unknown Speaker  6:33

Fabulous.

Ryan Boelter  6:34

Absolutely. And I believe my character was a pet. If I remember correctly.

Adira Slattery  6:40

Well, I'm pretty sure isn't that that's a whole character type and Visigoths versus mob just yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was on the one shot episode.

Ryan Boelter  6:49

Yeah. Yeah. Fantastic.

Adira Slattery  6:53

Yeah. Lucia is a great designer. Alright, um, but I'm not gonna go with Pat. No, even though we did all of those things. I'm gonna go with child.

Ryan Boelter  7:07

Oh, interesting. Okay. So this for the sun. I have tech co news anchor. And stockbroker. That's very interesting. Now I can see news anchor kind of being and in to your character. But I almost want to go tech CEO. Because that would be really interesting, too.

Adira Slattery  7:37

Yeah. So how does this tech CEO love this? No, this literal child?

Ryan Boelter  7:44

There, they're literally a parent and child. Yeah, it's gotta be right.

Adira Slattery  7:52

I mean, there, there are all sorts of things you can do. You can do mentorship,

Ryan Boelter  7:58

you could do child friend or something like that.

Adira Slattery  8:02

Neighbors, you also

Ryan Boelter  8:06

see you in child, parent.

Adira Slattery  8:11

Now, here is where those relationship things on the character sheets come into play. Right? So we have the fool being a child. And we know that it's the child of the sun. But that orbit of child isn't very specific as to how they relate specifically to my character, right? So I would go on to my character and relationship things and write something down in the fool if I so choose. Otherwise, that can be defined just in play. Because only one of those relationship things is going to be filled out at the end of this process on your own character sheet. The rest get defined and codified as characters get introduced throughout play.

Ryan Boelter  8:57

Okay. Interesting.

Adira Slattery  9:00

Okay, you have the option of filling out more if you want to at the start. Yeah, you can always do more work.

Ryan Boelter  9:06

Right. So we've got this tech CEO and this child. Do we want to name these? These folks? I like names. I like names too.

Adira Slattery  9:17

Let's have the child's name be Skylar, let's go is

Ryan Boelter  9:25

he? Alright, was that he him for Skyler. All right, and I'm gonna go with a I guess. Zayn Friedrich?

Adira Slattery  9:36

St. Friedrich. So that means Skyler, Skyler Friedrich most likely.

Ryan Boelter  9:40

Yeah. And Zane is also he him. Nice. Very cool. All right, what's next? We've got six more pairs together, right? Seven savate. All sweet,

Adira Slattery  9:53

cuz we're also in here.

Ryan Boelter  9:55

Ooh.

Adira Slattery  9:56

Yeah. We'll be hitting one of us in just a moment. Okay. But we have one more pair before then which is death and the Hierophant. Ooh. So death is one of yours.

Ryan Boelter  10:08

Yeah. Okay, so death, letting go while cleaning fast. So this is a former cellmate, a patient, or a librarian. I'm going to go librarian on this one. That sounds nice.

Adira Slattery  10:27

Yeah. And then for the Hierophant I have mentor, parent or clergy. Easily perceptive but stubborn. And I'm going to go with mentor. Nice. And what if my journalism mentor is married it to your librarian friend?

Ryan Boelter  10:52

Hmm. I like that. Yeah.

Adira Slattery  10:55

Married to death.

Ryan Boelter  11:00

All right. Let's see librarian. Go with Janine she hurt.

Adira Slattery  11:10

And then for my mentor. Let's go with let's go with chance.

Ryan Boelter  11:19

Ooh,

Adira Slattery  11:20

also she her.

Ryan Boelter  11:22

Nice. We have a Do we have a last name for these two wonderful people. Parker, I like Parker,

Adira Slattery  11:34

okay. The next pair we have is the Empress which is one of yours and the moon which is me. Okay. So, this establishes a relationship between whatever you pick as the Empress and my character.

Ryan Boelter  11:48

Oh, interesting. So the Empress is very beautiful yet similarly selfish. And I have the options of DOM, dilettante and escort and just because I am playing a, a cache what is what is that called? A gifted dilettante in my personal beyond the wall game. I'm going to pick divertente.

Adira Slattery  12:20

Have I perhaps done some stories about this person? Like I interviewed them?

Ryan Boelter  12:25

Oh,

Adira Slattery  12:26

yeah, probably. And did the Empress like this interview?

Ryan Boelter  12:32

Yes. All right. I think I think they were ecstatic about it. Alright, so the Empress name will be you know, I'm just going to use the name of going to be on the wall character. One.

Adira Slattery  12:51

There we go.

Ryan Boelter  12:53

She her. Awesome. Okay.

Adira Slattery  12:57

Then we have the magician. And temporary. The Magician is one of yours and temperance is one of mine. temperance. Yeah. temperance is balanced, yet fragile. And this is an assistant, a rehab buddy or a doctor. And I'm gonna go with our rehab, buddy.

Ryan Boelter  13:21

Okay. And for the magician, it says they are creative, but manipulative. And my options are pickpocket lover or professional. Professor. Oh, yeah. Professor. That's right. That makes more sense. Um, and this is a relationship to like, I know this person through something.

Adira Slattery  13:47

Yeah. Yeah. So this defines their orbit around you, right? So if they're a pickpocket, then you know them through sort of general crime stuff. You know them as a pickpocket. If they're a lover than they're your lover. If they're a professor, maybe they're a former professor, maybe. Maybe you're a college student. Maybe they're a weird professor who lives down the street from you.

Ryan Boelter  14:09

I'm gonna say lover,

Adira Slattery  14:12

lover. Nice.

Ryan Boelter  14:15

And what was what was the one that you had a rehab, buddy. Okay. So how do they know each other? Um, do you have thoughts on this one?

Adira Slattery  14:27

One if you're your lover is my friend sponsor.

Ryan Boelter  14:32

Okay. Okay,

Adira Slattery  14:35

and I'm gonna name my friend. Granite.

Ryan Boelter  14:41

Granite.

Adira Slattery  14:42

Yeah, we're gonna go xizor get some Neo pronouns in there.

Ryan Boelter  14:49

Nice. Okay, the lover. Let's see. got so many names out here already. I've tried not to repeat any trying to think of like a good acronym. Name that's kinda general gender neutral. Why do you use MJ or JV? Because they're two good friends of mine on a hoarder Borealis.

Unknown Speaker  15:16

What about FB?

Ryan Boelter  15:20

FB? Yeah. Oh interesting. So FB my lover they them pronouns.

Adira Slattery  15:29

Alright, now we're back to another relationship with one of the main characters. So we have the tower and the star You are the tower and the star for me is hopeful but insecure. is a rookie, a third wheel or protege and I'm going to go with protege

Ryan Boelter  15:50

Alright, so the tower me being the the driven killer.

Adira Slattery  15:57

Hmm. So you know, the person who I'm like taking under my wing?

Ryan Boelter  16:03

Yeah. Okay. How would I know that person?

Unknown Speaker  16:10

What if they're your sibling? Oh,

Ryan Boelter  16:12

I like that.

Adira Slattery  16:14

Yeah, let's go with our brother. Okay. How about younger younger brother

Ryan Boelter  16:19

younger brother? Sure.

Adira Slattery  16:23

Let's name them trip.

Unknown Speaker  16:24

trip.

Adira Slattery  16:26

Trip him.

Ryan Boelter  16:27

I don't have a last name. So

Adira Slattery  16:31

yeah, we didn't give ourselves last names for our for our own character.

Ryan Boelter  16:34

So Uh huh. And Alexa may not be her actual name.

Unknown Speaker  16:39

Yeah.

Ryan Boelter  16:39

It could be though.

Adira Slattery  16:41

Mm hmm. So let's do I think that we haven't done that, which is let's mark this relationship as secret.

Ryan Boelter  16:51

Oh, yes. Can you only mark a few of our bar and one of them as secret time or no, you

Adira Slattery  16:59

can mark as many of them as secret as you want. Okay.

Ryan Boelter  17:03

Very cool. Yeah. So secret relationship. Oh, my check mark. Just it turns super tiny. Oh, no. There we go. And then this is sibling to the star.

Adira Slattery  17:21

Yeah. Cool. All right. So next we have the wheel of fortune and the High Priestess. The Wheel of Fortune is one of yours.

Ryan Boelter  17:33

Oh, my format. It's been thrown off. Oh, no. Using notepad plus plus and I've tabbed over to like all the what everything was and now know the names of the things are too long. No, it's fine. I'll just go to the other line. There we go. Ah, balance has been restored.

Adira Slattery  17:55

Right and good finally in the world.

Ryan Boelter  17:57

Yep. My spacing is correct. All right. So a wheel of fortune is mine. It says they are wholly unpredictable. And it is assassin. Phone. scammer and janitor. Whoo. That is an array of selections there. Oh my goodness. Font

Adira Slattery  18:21

scammer is probably one of my favorite ones that I've written. Just because none of people interact with phone scammers.

Ryan Boelter  18:29

Yeah, it. You don't think about it, but I need somebody. Somebody is out there doing it. Uh huh. Hello, I would like to talk to you about your car automobile insurance running out. Yep. No, no. That's fine.

Adira Slattery  18:50

Let's, which one are you thinking?

Ryan Boelter  18:51

Oh, gosh, this is paired up with your high priestess.

Unknown Speaker  18:57

Yeah,

Ryan Boelter  18:58

I'm gonna say I'm an assassin.

Adira Slattery  19:03

Nice. Well, the High Priestess is a sensitive yet secretive. And I have the options of older sibling receptionist or add an elderly neighbor. And I'm gonna go with an elderly neighbor. Love the nosy neighbor. Uh huh.

Ryan Boelter  19:28

And how does an assassin or the elderly neighbor know each other? Ah, I have something.

Adira Slattery  19:34

A shirt. Go for it. What do you got hit me. Um,

Ryan Boelter  19:38

they're married. Oh,

Unknown Speaker  19:39

yes.

Adira Slattery  19:42

let's mark this one secret.

Ryan Boelter  19:44

Uh huh. Oh, that's lovely.

Adira Slattery  19:49

So that means that my neighbor is an assassin. Uh huh. At least and one of them.

Ryan Boelter  19:56

An elderly assassin. Most likely at that

Adira Slattery  20:00

So I'm gonna name my elderly neighbor dot she her

Ryan Boelter  20:04

Oh, okay. I love it. Um, dot

Adira Slattery  20:12

she her What do you think it for the assassin?

Ryan Boelter  20:15

Oh goodness. Um, I was kind of thinking of like a used to be like the femme fatale from like the old bond type situations. Yes. Only 40 years later.

Unknown Speaker  20:32

Yeah.

Ryan Boelter  20:34

So, um Oh gosh, it's got to be something like a penny or pennies worth or something. Kinda I'm gonna go with Penny. Penny. Yeah. Penny and she her pronouns.

Adira Slattery  20:51

I am very into older, lesbian femme fatale

Ryan Boelter  21:01

retired with quotes,

Unknown Speaker  21:03

yes.

Adira Slattery  21:06

Yeah, who knows dad might have also been an assassin.

Ryan Boelter  21:08

Exactly. Yeah.

Adira Slattery  21:12

Yeah. even tried to kill each other.

Ryan Boelter  21:15

That's very possible. Oh, now we have to play the prequel with Penny and dot. All right.

Adira Slattery  21:25

The next pair is strength and justice. So justice is one of mine. Often fair, but too quick to judge. I have a best friend, a private eye or a bartender. And I'm gonna go with bartender, nice.

Ryan Boelter  21:46

Strength of they're passionate, but prideful, and they have the choices of handler, PTA, mom, and celebrity. And that is just fantastic. A PTA mom is a good choice.

Adira Slattery  22:01

It's very evocative. Uh huh.

Ryan Boelter  22:04

Um, okay, let's see here. I'm kind of between PTA mom and celebrity. And I think I'm gonna go with PTA mom. Yeah, that sounds good. Um, and what would their relationship be?

Adira Slattery  22:21

What if the bartender works for the PTA mom? Okay. The PTA mom is also a small business owner.

Ryan Boelter  22:29

Hmm. I like that. Huh?

Adira Slattery  22:32

I'm gonna name the part tender. Chip. And we're gonna use e they pronouns.

Ryan Boelter  22:40

Alright, PTA mom. Hmm. I'm just keep thinking back to Christina Applegate. performance in bad mom's. Which was just fantastic. And over the top with Christina. I think I think I have to Christina. Yeah, she hurt. Hey, Ryan,

Adira Slattery  23:05

we're on the last one. Oh, boy. It is the world and the Hanged Man.

Ryan Boelter  23:11

Ooh.

Adira Slattery  23:11

So the world is one of yours.

Ryan Boelter  23:14

Yeah. Okay. Let me see here. The world, spontaneous, but incomplete. And I have the choice between student, taxi driver, and tattoo artist. And I'm gonna go with a student.

Adira Slattery  23:35

And then for the Hanged Man, I have insightful but stuck in place. I have journalist, forensics or younger sibling. And I'm going to go with forensics. So how does my forensics buddy? Know your student friend? Hmm. Now they are students, and then they go to school? Are they a student in that you're teaching them something?

Ryan Boelter  24:03

Oh. Why not? Both? Which tells a little bit more about myself. Yeah. I'm gonna say that. They are a student at the University and the forensic specialist did a guest presentation there, huh? Yeah. And this student and them had a conversation after the presentation due to interests in forensics.

Adira Slattery  24:40

Yeah. Guest meant lecture and coffee, buddy.

Ryan Boelter  24:43

Yeah.

Adira Slattery  24:44

That sounds like your character teach us something. So this would be the perfect opportunity for you to fill in the relationship section on your sheet with the world.

Ryan Boelter  24:54

Okay. So one second. All right. So Where am I going here? Then relationships? Right? And for the world? Yep. So what do I want to put here? You'd put what you teach them? Oh, um, gosh, is it is it as cliche as criminology or

Adira Slattery  25:17

it could be? Yeah.

Ryan Boelter  25:20

I'm gonna go with that criminology.

Adira Slattery  25:22

There we go. Look, sometimes it's fun to lean into tropes.

Ryan Boelter  25:26

Yeah. Terminology teacher.

Adira Slattery  25:28

Cool. And then we need to come up with names for the student in forensics, if you want.

Ryan Boelter  25:33

Yeah, let's let's do that. Why Why stop now?

Adira Slattery  25:36

We didn't come up with names for everyone else.

Ryan Boelter  25:39

We really have.

Adira Slattery  25:40

Yeah. My friends. his buddy is going to be named Hugo. Rice, Yuko Gomez. So.

Ryan Boelter  25:51

Alright, and I am going to name the student, Mandy crypton. Nice. Um, the sheet. Sounds good. Yeah. Wow. That's a lot of characters.

Adira Slattery  26:05

Yeah, that's everybody. So we just came up with 22 people came up with 11 relationships in between those 22 people specified to sort of relationships on those orbits. And we have a nice, complicated web. And now they're gonna open to start dying.

Ryan Boelter  26:33

Yeah. Oh, no.

Adira Slattery  26:37

Yeah. So that's, that's the thing is that sometimes people want to talk about tension. They're like, how do you manage all of these characters? I'm like, well, they start dying.

Unknown Speaker  26:47

That's how you manage them. It's

Ryan Boelter  26:49

Oh, no. Okay.

Unknown Speaker  26:52

Yeah.

Ryan Boelter  26:53

I my poor babies. Yes.

Adira Slattery  26:59

Yeah. It's, it's, it's wonderful. Because during this process and making all of these characters you get really attached to them. Right. Like, like, I have a lot of like feelings for like, dot and Penny. And yeah, like, I think that the relationship between Alexa and the student Mandy is super interesting. And yeah. My spouse is just like one level of separation away from you. You won't go to the same gym.

Ryan Boelter  27:32

Yeah. That's very true. Yeah. And and have probably worked out together. Mm hmm. Oh, goodness. gracious. Yeah. What is tingle? Wed weaved. Exactly. That's amazing. Um, yeah. And then it just kind of goes from there. And then I've got, I've got a sibling that I have to worry about. Yep. Um, yeah. And this all sorts of interesting stuff going on here.

Adira Slattery  28:09

Because also when we talk about people dying, right, like, like your characters is, is the playbook is called the killer. Yeah, like your character is probably gonna be killing people. Yes. But anyone can kill anyone.

Ryan Boelter  28:22

Okay. So it's kind of like a like a murder. mystery. Almost entangled in a in a romance effectively, but the mystery is not really there.

Adira Slattery  28:35

Yeah, it's more dark comedy.

Ryan Boelter  28:36

Yeah. Okay. Wonderful. Oh, my goodness. Okay.

Adira Slattery  28:42

There's actually a specific mystery element that a lot of people assume there's going to be intention that there isn't, which is that after the first scene, the investigator and the killer know who each other are?

Ryan Boelter  28:55

Yeah. Oh, that's awesome.

Adira Slattery  28:57

Yeah, I I personally wanted to avoid sort of encouraging people to roleplay lying and gaslighting to each other. So I just took that out.

Ryan Boelter  29:11

Yeah, no, might as well. And you can probably have some some intrigue and stuff in there. Especially so much intrigue still. When everything's in the open and and I'm a huge fan and proponent of out of character conversations.

Adira Slattery  29:31

That's the other part about thinking about this game not as GM list but as GM full is that it's, it's fun sometimes to sort of reveal these things out of character to each other. And yeah, then play through your characters realizing these things, right? Yeah.

Ryan Boelter  29:51

I'm currently editing a horrible realises take on Stephen King's it.

Unknown Speaker  29:57

I'm

Ryan Boelter  29:59

playing through krisztian prevous is a back to dairy supplement for monster of the week. And the amount of like, Table Talk and care in between scenes of setting up like these really intense and like very thoughtful scenes. And then improv in through those scenes is just remarkable to see. And, and doing that for horror and doing that for it's technically romance in some respects as well. I mean, it's losers a love story. Yeah. Um, I see that working very well for almost any game and especially a game like this, where a romance and murder are at the forefront of this discussion. Yeah. Wonderful. Awesome. So we created 22 characters.

Adira Slattery  30:57

Yeah.

Unknown Speaker  30:59

And it was pretty painless.

Ryan Boelter  31:00

It really was, um, I really liked the the, the pairing of the the different Arcana and and figuring out relationships from there. That's pretty cool. Awesome. Well, I think your your, this has been a lot of fun. I really, really enjoyed this. Yeah, absolutely. And we also have some links in the show notes, as well. Thank you again, for joining us. And thank you to everybody out there for listening. And please join us on the next episode for our discussion lock. Yeah, this is probably the most character creation dense series that we've had to date. 22 characters was a trip, and we somehow managed to name all of them, and actually give them all pronouns, which was, which was really in the end, not that painful. It's pretty painless. I don't think I have any calls to action right now. I know I have been pretty exhausted lately. And I'm sure Amelia is likely in the same boat. But we are both extremely thankful that you've chosen to listen to us. And we really do. Hope that we've brought a bit of joy to your day. So sincerely, thank you. We are hard at work for the next couple of series or so we've got a couple people potentially lined up for recordings. And it is such a joy making this for all of you. And we really hope that you have a lot of fun listening. So please, please join us again. Next time tension gets this the series gets amazing. Next episode. We go into some fantastic places in the fanfic portion that I think you're going to really like so all of that out of the way. Take care everyone stay safe, and keep making those amazing people. We'll see you next time.
