Yes. I'm really excited about this to be it's such a fun game. It's been quite a while since you were on all the way back in series one when we were just baby podcasters. Do you want to remind everybody what you're up to where they can find you all that kind

of stuff? Definitely. Yes. So I still talk about d&d fifth edition anymore. It's just d&d in general. But if you go to your pod catcher of choice, which I like saying this everywhere I can, in my mind, that's like a, an entity, like it's an actual pod catcher, like with a net, anyone out there and catching them format. But if you go, you can look up dungeon Master's block that and you'll hear my voice there. Or dm Gnostics where you can hear Celeste Kondo, which and I have practical ideas on how to just work out those mental mental muscles. And of course, whelmed The Young Justice files, we're starting to ramp that back up after a short hiatus. And we have a lot of really interesting guests on the way for that. Well, let's go ahead and get into this. And we will start by discussing what this game is all about what's in a game?

All right, let's start with the setting. What is the setting for Phoenix dawn command.

 

Neal Powell  7:03  

So it's, in some ways, I want to say it's a fairly traditional RPG setting. And in a lot of ways, it's more, it's the tools to build a traditional RPG setting in the way that you want to. So as we noted before, Keith Baker is there. So he was the person that had created everon. And there's some serious everyone feels in that the day. So the big thing with the everon is that there's the day of mourning, where basically there's this 100 year war, something, something happens. And it's key that I say it that way, and a whole continent just kind of disappears. And nobody knows why that happened. Something very similar is here, in that a nebulous, bad known as the dread has taken over a third of the world in the past three years. And the dread encompasses everything that you want it or need it to be, is it undead? Is it skin changers, there's the chant, which basically takes over the minds of entire areas when they hear it. And then of course, the flip side is that you are Phoenix is someone that has died, a glorious, or at least extraordinary death, and you have come back, and you are the last bastion of hope to stop the dread. There's a lot more lore, you both have the book, you know, there's a lot more. That's the very basic premise behind it

as a very big book, too. So yeah. So what tools do we need to play this game, then? Your imagination? So

thank you for that. So the biggest thing is, friends also. Friends, well, people, you know, people willing to play a game with you.

Yes, not as many as you would think, though we can, we'll get into that, because I've played this in a lot of different sized groups. But one of the biggest things is you You do have to buy Phoenix dawn command. It's a box set, because one of the biggest differences with this RPG is that you have cards. In a lot of ways. It's a pseudo deck builder, but we were talking beforehand, one of the biggest things is that it's more like taking spell cards from d&d or other systems and just doing that with your entire character. Because even your class card ends up being like representative of where you are on the map, if you will. So like if, if our all three of our characters were lined up next to each other, all three of us would put our character card next to each other. And then you would have the the person we're facing or the NPC and you could lay that card there that can give basic representation of where we are in space.

initiative and stuff too. Don't you like in like combat some stuff like you move or like you put cards in certain places, or am I totally I'm saying these things and I'm

like, No, no It actually gets even, both more and less complicated. And it's one of the really interesting things about the game. I don't I, I have so much knowledge, I never know when to share it. Feel free whenever. So initiative is amazing. And that's where it goes back to I've played this with just two people. So myself and someone else, because one of the things about the enemy cards is that it's based on speed. And the speed rating is just how many player turns are taken before the enemy turn happens. So then it so if there were so the basic concept would be, let's say that the enemy has a speed of two, if there were two characters

down here. So that's this the strength in the back facing you. It'll say speed. Oh, look that there's all kinds of info on the back of it. This is such a great podcast.

But basically, if it has a speed of two, two characters would go and then the enemy would, if you had. So if you think of a whole round, if you will, that in there were four characters, the enemy would end up going twice in that round as you cycle through the four characters. So it was really, like I said, it was really interesting to play with just two people, because fundamentally, all the concepts work. No matter no matter how you were approaching that. Yeah. So all that to say, you really just have to buy the box to play the game. Because as the cards that you need, it has the giant tome. I switched in the PDF, because it's it's a very big book.

 

Amelia Antrim  11:35  

Yeah. Yeah, we were talking about that earlier to it. Because it all comes in a box. And it has cards. I've played this game before. And when I opened up the box, I was like this, this book is huge. Because in my brain, it was like it comes in a box must be a board game. It's a box. It has cards. It's a board game. And then it's got this like, giant book. And then it was like, Oh, no, RPGs have giant books. That's fine. But like, for some reason, because it wasn't a box. That meant the book was too big. I was like, I couldn't match those concepts together.

 

Neal Powell  12:09  

Why? Cuz I always story like, I mean, I want to point over because my closet with games is in there. And that's, that's usually where it goes up there with the other games. And so like you said, it's got cards, it's got tokens, and then it has a giant tome.

 

Amelia Antrim  12:21  

Yeah, well, I have a, an RPG shelf. And then I have a board game shelf. And this one was on the board game shelf, because it's in a box. So a star crossed, and it's in a box. So what kind of stories and themes? Is this game meant to explore?

 

Neal Powell  12:40  

That is probably the toughest question you have for me thus far, because one of the things is I think from Okay, we'll go stories, and we'll go themes, and maybe I'll do a good job. So one of the stories is that, again, you have this overwhelming dread in the past three years, it's taken over a third of the known world. And you have these phoenixes, who long ago, they were just prevalent everywhere, then they basically tried to rule the world with an iron fist. And were basically secluded off to an island. And now there's not as many but they're trying to come back and help save the world, a world that doesn't necessarily believe they're real anymore, because they've been gone for so long. So from that perspective, I think it's again, it's, you can do some pretty standard RPG stories from that lens, because again, anything you want to be in the dread is in the dread. But what I think is one of the really interesting things, and the reason like I love character creation for this is that the themes you get to explore through that process are really deep about both the character and and end up being really deep about you, and how you're approaching that because the whole conceit is like you have to have died at least once to start, and you're gonna die again, to level up like that's the level of mechanic his death. And it's how did that death happen? And what do you look like, after the trials of that death? Like the, again, the stories end up being some classic RPG stuff with that element of just deep, deep introspection on like, who your character is, and why they're making the choices that they're making. Mm hmm.

So then what do characters actually do in the game then?

 

Neal Powell  14:23  

They are epic. Because, because you started out as just a normal, normal person in the world. I mean, one of the examples is literally like farmer, soldier child, like you could have just been a child. And for whatever reason, it was, some of it makes me and this is not. This is a very thin analogy, but it kind of makes me think of how man I've connected dots in a weird way in my head. What's the groundhog day movie with Tom Cruise? Where he where he died? He's a soul. During he dies, but he gets the

cash but they change the name they do twice the name is Ko, don't think I won't I'll do it.

Edge of Tomorrow after tomorrow. That's right.

 

Neal Powell  15:22  

But then they changed his name to something else that really threw me off. But it's that same, it's that same kind of concept like you're but even to the nth degree because now you're you can do things that no normal human could even dream of. And as you continue to progress, the you become much, much stronger. But the other thing is that you only have seven chances for that to happen. Yeah. So after that 7/7 death, that character is just gone. But it is also the level of mechanics. So then you do you need to just get farther and farther out to that edge. As you get more and more powerful. Oh, goodness. So yeah, basically, they can do and will do things that no one else could do.

So our next question is, what is unique about this game, I think the level up mechanic is one of them. And the way that like, this is one of the first games I played where the, like progression mechanic and story tie so neatly together. And it's become a thing that like, since then I have really, really wanted in games, and been really frustrated when they when it's just like, you get some XP, and you can buy whatever you want with it. Whereas this one, it's like, they are directly tied to what happens in the game. So I think that's one of the biggest, like, unique pieces. What do you know, I

 

Neal Powell  16:52  

wholeheartedly agree, because one of the things I mean, a very common d&d thing is that I, I or someone would know like, this is my thought of what my character progression would be over the next 20 levels. And I wrapped that out in my mind. Maybe I've even mapped it out on d&d beyond and I just click back and forth through my levels or things like that. But one of the things about it is that it's, it's based on the death that happens in game. So there's, there's theoretically, no real I mean, you could choose to do something in that moment to gain the depth that you're you're hoping for. But you could also die in a way that you weren't expecting, that would then dictate in a brand new way, what you're adding into your character, because these are the things that are actually happening to your character. Refer, if you will, your first death is always the most important because it is what defines you as originally coming back as a Phoenix. But then what's happening with you and the other people in play is defining what's happening going forward. So I want that of course carts, right. So it comes in a box with like, pseudo, it's like pseudo deck building, and I think it gets framed too much that way. Because it is more of just a character sheet broken into cards. So yeah,

it's just the things that are like you would write on your own sheet. And they've written them down and you grab them, like,

yeah, and there's a little bit of a, it does end up having a little bit of a deckbuilding feel, though, because I can see what's in my hand currently. So I can, I can always do something. But there are those moments when I can see that everything's kind of lined up. And I can do something, if you will, legendary. And so then everyone can kind of know what everyone else has and then knowing, okay, so I could just do a regular turn, or I could do this above and beyond turn, we all have the right cards together. And then like I said, we go we dip into that legendary territory.

So this is the part where we talk a little bit about the history of the game. I saw that it was kick started in 2015. And finally fulfilled in 2016. I was tickled when I when I saw the Kickstarter, and it said we're gonna have 120 page rulebook. And all these cards, it's gonna be great. This is a 460 page tome. It's heavy. This thing could knock somebody out. It's It's wonderful. I love I love the heft of it. I love the quality of the pages and stuff like that. But is there ever 120 pages? It's not 120 pages? No, I would just find better to over deliver, right. But is there any other history of the game that you know of? Neil?

 

Neal Powell  19:46  

So that's, so that's one of the biggest things is that it was the Kickstarter and then it was fulfilled and then so I'm realizing now that I played it pretty early, and I had the privilege thanks to a category of Last time I played it was with Keith Baker. Oh, cool. That helped. Yeah. Learn and immersive and duel do all of those things that it was either very shortly or while they were fulfilling because I can't remember the first year I went but I know it was the first year I went from there. And the only the only big thing that's happened is if you go to drive thru RPG you can go and you can basically buy an expansion to because in the box, you can only There are six available characters, but you could only play four at a time. Go to drive thru RPG, you can buy the cards necessary to be able to play all six at one time. And it comes with the extra resource cards as well as a few additional traits. So that's really the only big addition to the game since its come out. I know that he has wanted to do things but the together studios has done a lot of really interesting things like they're the ones doing the adventure zone board games, and things like that. So they've had a lot that certainly Yeah, they did

two I think oh yeah,

which that thing was gangbusters because it was what the Decemberists and everything like that. As well as of course Keith did the wayfinders Guide to ever on I'm sure he was really helpful with ever on the last war. And he's been putting out different really high high end dmws busy dude. Yeah, he's got a little bit going on. So I know his thought was at one point to circle back around to it, but I'm not sure where that all set. So again, the biggest thing would be buying that from Drive Thru RPG. Very cool.

This is the part where we go over some quick terms and concepts that people might want to know as we go through character creation, just so nobody's confused. A couple that Brian pulled, I'm not gonna say we I'm not even gonna pretend I had anything to do. Ryan got all of this together. These are actually mine. There you go. And Neil Neil handled it. Look, I was busy falling down some stairs. Thank you both for putting all this together. So let's start with crucible.

Definitely. So the crucible is what is going back to that element of what really makes this setting and everything about this different. So again, the base level concept is we'll just use I'm, I'm me, I'm a person in this world, I die, maybe it's at the hands of the dread. Maybe it's something along those lines. And rather than going to whatever afterlife I'm chosen as a fee is the potential to be a Phoenix. And I go into the crucible. And the crucible is basically a place where then I learn and train to become a Phoenix. Now that said, I love the crucible, it's sometimes difficult to explain because it gets super tiny, why me instantaneously, because the amount of time that happens in the crucible and the daylit world, as it is called, are not equitable in any way, shape or form. In that the example it basically uses is you could have died 300 years ago, and you're coming back as a Phoenix. But it felt like you spent a couple days in the crucible. Oh, and and the reverse could certainly be true. You could have died a couple days ago. And it felt like you spent 300 years training in the crucible.

Oh, interesting.

And so once you're in play, because you're basically an active group in the world, you will come back at the next dawn. But that same conversation about the time that happens in the crucible while you're training to level up is still true. So you could be coming back at the next dawn. And again, it felt like like one or two seconds. I mean, it's whatever you need it to be for your character or it could have felt like you spent another 100 years in the crucible.

So and when you return from the crucible, and this is my favorite thing is that what you look like and how you present is everything up to you. One of the things that they usually do kind of suggest is that over time and over those levels, your separation from your humanity does start to stretch out because you do have all this power that comes from next term, the flame. So basically, it's the flame that you're attached to going back to the Phoenix analogy and things like that. So you're attached to a specific flame. And I guess also in the crucible, which is also I guess part of character creation, which we'll get to is that you have a mentor who is also attached to the flame and has has done kind of the same things as you and they're teaching you and how are you attached to them? Did you know them before Did you not? So then we'll also use the term sparks maybe at some point. So that I guess this is another concept for Phoenix that's really interesting is that you have both health sparks. So if you lose all of either one of them, you die. And you can choose to spend sparks, like if you're basically if you're, let's say five away from something legendary could spend five sparks. And it could also be your last five Spark. And so then you're choosing to complete this legendary action, but then you're dying. In the same way.

School, when rank, I put all those together so your school is based, we're just gonna use d&d terms to make all of these work. Your school is totally your class. Your wing is your group of characters, your rank is your level. And then Marshal is just the DM GM term. So it's the person running the game is known as the Marshal. Feel like? Yes. Did that spark Any questions? I feel like I went really fast through those,

like self explanatory. Yep. I have zero knowledge of the system before this, aside from you dying come back. Um, yes, it was true. So all the knowledge you had was 100%. True. That's true. So this is how I am coming into it. And this is all making sense so far. All right. So is there anything then else then that we need to know before we dive into character creation?

I don't think so. I think we are we are primed and ready.

I have thought through that very concept. And I see nothing short of like something really official happening through like an online service, because you just have so much tied to physical aspects. Yeah, you'd

have to almost have something like through role 20 with the custom cards or virtual tabletop. Yep, can do that as well.

Well, I know that like you offered to cover this game with us back in the very beginning to and the whole time. We were like, how are we going to do that? And then finally, Ryan and I now both have the game. And so we're like, now's the time. We can do it.

All right. Okay. So how do we start? How do we, what's our first step? You got a bunch of cards here, I don't know what I'm doing.

 

Neal Powell  27:35  

Step one is that we all need to select a school. So basically, it's tough. It's tough, because it's, again, it's the most important choice you're about to make. So we're doing this right up front is because basically, you're defining what your first death was. So the other thing is that in each wing, you can't repeat a school. Okay? So if I were to choose a Durant, a phoenix that has died, because they aren't tough enough, and the lesson they learn is to be stronger than that would no longer be a choice for either of you. Okay. It sounds very powered by the apocalypse ask where you can only have one play book at a time in play. Usually, yeah. And the other thing is that basically the I guess, the one thing I did miss is that you have three attributes which are strength, Grace and intellect. Again, going back to the DND intellect is going to take over intelligence and wisdom, strength is basically going to take over strength, surprise, and constitution and then grit Grace is taking over, basically, both physical and social grace. So it's both dexterity and charisma that makes sense. So everyone has grace. And then it's whether or not a class also has strength or intellect. And you can only have to have either a strength or intellect. So basically, we can all pick strength. schools or all pick intellect schools. Okay. Sorry. The rulebook says it the tome No.

Yes, so basically, it's just deciding what kind of death is our is our initial death.

Okay, so yeah, I see. Like, on the page 130 of the rulebook, it says, the six different schools, three of them are strength and grace. Three of them are intellect and grace.

Yep. Okay. And then just not that it really matters for this conversation but or for this exercise that we're doing but often the base game because if you can, anyone that wants to, you can go download the ikonics, which are pre generated characters, but the two that they leave off are the forceful and the elemental? They're a little bit more complicated. So those aren't in the pre generated character.

Are you willing to give me a quick explanation of what each one is? Yes. For? For our listeners, definitely not for me, because I totally know our listeners. Could you explain what each of these scores?

 

Neal Powell  30:27  

Yes, so you have the direct which ends up so we've talked for more of a mechanical perspective to kind of help out. So like I said, You're not tough enough. So you end up being kind of the tank of the group. So you're willing to get out there take more damage here, you're harder and tougher to tougher to kill, which ends up being a super interesting mechanic, of course, for a game where you need to die, to level up. So that's the Durant, the devoted ends up being so die for others, and they learn to strengthen and defend their allies. So the devoted ends up being a little bit more like the cleric. So sometimes you can basically take the damage of others and redirect that damage back to the enemies that you're, you're up against the forceful die because they either aren't fast enough or can't overcome an obstacle. So they ended up being kind of like a ranged archery type is one of the like Ranger feel to it is probably the easiest way to say that elemental is a phoenix that dies for duty as they burn their very life force to scour away the enemies of the Empire. And that one ends up being what kind of major Do you want to be? It could be or poor, you could go the route of more like shamanistic or, or things like that, but it's more of that elemental kind of spell casting, set, shrouded? So like, often a warforged will have a name that makes very visual or social sense for the warforged itself. So like the devote the Durant, that is the iconic, it's the pregenerated is called shepherd. That make sense. And so so that that's kind of how you how you approach the naming convention is something along those lines. Where it's like what is the Yeah, the bitter is named wolf. So what will eventually get there, but I just wanted to say up front, don't worry about it.

And then if I use one of these when I'm doing a skill spread, again, so I'm playing cards to complete a skill of some sort, if I can say how it ties back to one of these four, I can add five to that total.

And your combat style is the number of cards that you can play in it. So you can play to intellect cards for an attack or to grace cards for a defense. Yeah, and you also have a special attribute in there as well. Hmm.

But the devoted bond bond is pretty cool because you can put sparks equal to your rank plus the number of Phoenix is in your Wayne onto this card. And then any Phoenix in your Wayne may return one of the committed sparks to you on their turn to regain two sparks or draw two cards. And in addition, any member of your wind can send a Wayne send the Wayne a short telepathic message where you will then burn One Spark because of that So it has like massive, like group utility there. Versus I can do better in combat.

So then you could step through, see something and say, I need immediate assistance, or everything's fine. And so you can spend that spark telepathically let us know or the reverse could be true. We don't have a devoted who took back that. And I immediately sense that whoever went through is wounded. Yeah, now I'm using that bond. And yeah, there's no there's no range on it. Also, it's it's a concept I find very funny because it's like I've seen to you across the land, but you got to walk back. Yeah, I get I get the safety element of it. You don't want anyone to just magically show up in your in the middle of your fortress? So yeah, you gotta you're on foot patrol. After

But like until that moment, you can like if you had sparks, so yeah, it's basically if your health gets knocked out, but you still had sparks, you're like kind of haunting the area, if you will. And you can give those to other people until you give them all out. And then you disappear onto me until the dog.

And basically, like on your turn, you have the card that is referenced as the torch. And there are certain things that are listed there as elements that are in the area. And you can use those and then gain more on your skills and things like that. But there's sort of a one time use. So if it were like the one of the interested area, there's like this candelabra, basically. So let's say I pick it up and I stab somebody with it because I'm the better of course they did. Basically, I can get a benefit from that. But now I've used it. So it's no longer available on the torch, but it's like immediately giving everyone something to interact with. So you could have hidden behind it and then use that environmental element to then jump out and stab somebody.
